What happens during my first driving lesson?

The most common question that we hear is, ‘What happens during my first driving lesson?’ this is a very common question, and it is completely understandable. This is common for learners to ask, especially friends, family and the internet. The truth is everyone’s first driving lesson differs due to several reasons, including previous experience and if you are going for weekly or intensive automatic driving lessons. Whilst the specifics of your lesson will differ from that of another learner, several subjects will be covered when you are learning with Drive Auto London.

Legal checks

Before you hit the road and start learning to drive, your instructor will have to complete a few legal checks. The first check that your instructor will cover is to make sure your eyesight is safe for you to drive. This will be done by them usually asking you to read a number plate. If you know that you need glasses or normally wear contact lenses, please make sure that you wear them for your lessons as they will keep you safe. The other check is that your driving instructor must check your provisional driving licence. Your instructor will check that it is valid, and they will need to record some details from your licence, including your driver’s number.

Previous experience

Some learners begin their driving lessons with us after having driven previously, but most learners have never driven before. Due to the range of experience our learners have, your instructor will begin your lessons by having a quick conversation over any relevant experience you may have had. Your instructor will have this conversation with you as it allows them to plan the perfect first lesson for you and allow them to create a detailed lesson plan.

Driving to a safe place

For your first lesson, your driving instructor will take you to a quiet location close to where you live. As a beginner, your instructor will take you to a quiet area like an industrial estate or a small local estate. Your instructor will drive you there, and on the drive, they will discuss what they are doing, including gear changing, checking mirrors and their footwork.

Getting behind the wheel

When you have reached your location, you and your instructor will switch seats, and you will get to sit behind the wheel. Now you are behind the wheel, your instructor will begin to go through the car’s basic controls and show you how to adjust the mirrors, adjust the seat, and learn what each pedal controls. This conversation will only take 5-10 minutes, depending on any previous experience, however, it is critical that you are fully aware of the control and you are in the ideal driving position before you head off.

Moving off and stopping

The first basic skill that you will learn now you are confident on using the controls of the car is how to move off and stop the car. Your automatic driving instructor in London will demonstrate the basics of how to move off and stop your car whilst you drive. Due to driving in an automatic car, you do not need to worry about changing gears and your instructor will help you to perfect the basics of this movement.

Drive back and feedback

At the end of the lesson, your driving instructor will drive you back to where they collected you from or where you would like to drop off in the local area. Once you have reached your preferred drop off point, your instructor will give you some feedback on the lesson, such as strengths and weaknesses. These are some things you can think about before your next driving lesson, and they will help you prepare for your next lesson. You will also get booked in for your next driving lesson, so you have something to look forward to!
